Department of Gastroenterology, Hematology and Medical Oncology

The Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Metabolic and Endocrine Diseases, Hematology and Medical Oncology and Infectious Diseases (Chief, PD Dr. med. Edris Wedi) is dedicated to personalized high quality medical care. The Department is certified by the German Board for quality control. In addition: to patient care, its mission is to provide education for medical students and continue medical education for physicians.

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology

The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology serves as a national and international referral center for patients with gastrointestinal, biliary, pancreatic and liver diseases. Its hepatology branch is affiliated with the German Liver Foundation. With more than 15,000 endoscopic and sonographic examinations performed annually, the Division belongs to the most active units of its kind in Germany. All diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal, biliary and pancreatic endoscopic procedures are performed and the Division is equipped with the latest state of the art sonographic and endoscopic devices, such as high definition video endoscopy, video-capsule endoscopy, and endoscopic ultrasonography. With nearly 25 years experience in endoscopic ultrasound, the Division is a national leader in endoscopic ultrasonography.   

The Division of Metabolic and Endocrine Diseases

The Division of Metabolic and Endocrine Diseases provides guideline-oriented care for patients with metabolic and hormonal disorders. A special focus is on the structured medical care of patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus. All treatment modalities are offered, from education regarding life style modifications (exercise programs, nutritional counseling) to oral drug treatment, regular and intensified insulin therapy and insulin pumps. A close collaboration with the Department of Vascular Surgery ensures optimal care of diabetic patients with vascular complications. A Nutrition Team is integrated within the Division and supervises all forms of enteral and parenteral nutrition in the entire hospital. On a separate Diabetes Education Ward (one of only three of its kind in the Rhein-Main-Area) year-round two-week courses for insulin dependent patients are offered.

The Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology

The Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology is an integral part of the Integrated Tumor Center Offenbach. All benign and malignant tumors (with the exception of urogenital and gynecologic cancers) are treated in the Department of Medicine II. A special focus is placed on patients with gastrointestinal, liver, gallbladder, bile duct and pancreatic cancers. The close interdisciplinary cooperation with the Departments of Visceral Surgery and Radiotherapy ensures optimal patient care.

The Division of Infectious Diseases

The Division of Infectious Diseases is specialized in diagnosis and treatment of all types of communicable diseases. Compassionate care is provided to patients suffering from HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, air-borne, as well as food-borne and diarrheal diseases.
